Solana’s Alpenglow Goes Live, Aiming for 40x Faster Finality as Votes Move Off-Chain

HIGHLIGHTS Solana Alpenglow went live October 21, replacing TowerBFT with Votor and targeting ~150ms finality, roughly 85x faster than the old 12.8 seconds. The upgrade swaps ~2 SOL daily vote fees for a fixed 0.8 SOL per-epoch ticket, which Anza projects at about 60% lower validator operating costs. Activation follows an 18-month build and six testnet wipes; the Rotor data-dissemination phase is not yet scheduled for mainnet, so gains remain staged. Solana Alpenglow, the network's largest consensus overhaul since its 2020 launch, went live on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
