Ethereum Slashing Can Put a Validator’s Full Effective Balance at Risk

Ethereum can slash a validator’s Ether (ETH) stake for signing certain conflicting messages, with the loss reaching its full effective balance in a large event and making key management a central staking risk. Ethereum identifies three slashable conflicts: proposing two different blocks for one slot; attesting to different messages that share a target epoch; and making attestations whose source and target epochs overlap in a nested pattern. Proof-of-stake networks set their own conditions, so Ethereum’s rules do not define penalties on other chains. A missed block proposal alone does not trigger slashing on Ethereum.
